GLOW ECO FRIENDLY WITH GREEN BULBS

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that”

Martin Luther King Jr.

Well, only nature, in the form of the Sun, could drive out darkness from the lives of the people, by giving bright light, until the year 1879. Because, it was the year when Edison officially patented the incandescent light bulb, took it to production and gave us a great alternative to the dim candle lights.

Light bulbs:

Indeed, it is one of the greatest ideas and a major invention of all time since the world has begun. It is so celebrated that whenever we think of the word ‘idea’, we think of a light bulb glowing up. That is the intensity of its impact, which is worth mentioning.

Light bulbs, during its initial days, have given the people of that time a lot of power. Because, it did enable people to work after the sunset. This contributed a lot to the industrial revolution.

Indeed, the industrial revolution is undeniably the biggest leap of development in the era of mankind. A lot of trade started at that period making way to many businesses and a ton of job opportunities. Also, it led to a lot of inventions like flash cameras, flashlights, headlamps for automobiles and many more.

Let us come to the present:

Uff, and then we are here in 2021. A lot has changed in the lives of the people, over the years. And yes, to the light bulb itself too. But still, the light bulb is still a hero in our day to day life. Why? Because it gives us light when needed. And only light can drive out darkness.

Unfortunately, our hero now has some darker sides too. Not many, but some significant effects that affect nature. Let us dive deep in this topic and get to know the facts.

A light bulb is generally made out of a metal strip, glass outer covering and an inert gas inside. Nothing seems dangerous right? Then who is the villain to our hero? Well, that role is played by modern technology and environmental awareness.

Traditional light bulbs wear out easily on long usage and cause multiple issues. In the modern day, due to continuous need and usage of light bulbs there are high chances of this situation to likely occur. Also, light bulbs are hard to dispose of and that itself is a danger.

Statistics say that people bought approx 5.5 million light bulbs everyday which is roughly 2 billion light bulbs in a year, during last year 2020,  in the US alone. This fairly sums up the issue we are concerned about.

So, what should we do now?

To this question, a perfect answer will be like not to use light bulbs. But, perfection is seldom practical. And unfortunately, it does not apply here either. So, we can move to more green bulbs like the CFLs, LEDs, and Halogen alternatives.

Why do we need this change and what do they actually change? Numbers help.

The statistics above clearly state the answer to the previous question. And, to add to it, we have additional statistics too.

Based on recent research, we can say that greener alternative light bulbs last anywhere around 3-25 times more than the conventional ones. Also, they use marginally lesser power i.e 25%-80% lesser than the incandescent light bulbs.

Plus, these modern bulbs have a great CRI (Color Rendering Index) i.e maintaining the original color of the objects. Whereas, the traditional ones add a teal tint. This, however is not a huge issue, still adds to the limitations.

Conclusion:

In this way, this change replaces our hero and proves to be a worthy contender in the social, economical terms. So, it is high time already for us to be aware and leverage the lights in our lives. I end this article with a hope that I have given some enlightenment to you that will change your life - at least in a small way.
